Harvard Study Confirms: US Needs More Alternatives For Senior Housing

A new report released by Harvard University’s Joint Center for Housing Studies, Housing America’s Older Adults, has found that the United States is facing a demographic shift for which it is not well prepared, especially so when it comes to housing.

At a public seminar titled Aging + Place: Designing Housing & Communities for Aging Populations, which was organized in conjunction with the recent release of this new report, presentations on the report’s findings as well as panel discussions with leading experts in senior housing were featured. Presentation slideshows from the seminar can be found on the event’s website.

The report’s authors call for urgent action at all levels – private, public, local, state and federal – to ensure an adequate supply of housing that meets the needs of our aging population. The main characteristics of such housing include financial sustainability, accessibility, social connection, and integration with health systems.

It’s good to know that Phoenix Commons was specifically designed with these characteristics in mind. Members of the Phoenix Commons community enjoy the peace of mind that comes with knowing they will be in a sustainable, supportive community as they age, enjoying all that the Bay Area has to offer and in a building that will accommodate their changing needs. Moreover, the community will be supported by AEC Living, a family-owned company with decades of experience in elder care, thus providing a health care link that the Harvard report acknowledges is very important yet usually lacking.

If this exciting, new alternative to institutional senior housing appeals to you, contact us now to learn more about Phoenix Commons. Our members are looking for a diverse group of mature and vibrant individuals who enjoy sharing their time and gifts with the community – could you be one of those?

Construction Update: October 14, 2014

Construction is on schedule at Phoenix Commons, with steel rebar covering the wooden wall molds like mechanical ivy. Soon the crew will be ready to spray concrete, marking yet another milestone towards the completion of the Bay Area’s first senior cohousing community.

Meet the Members: Larry

The foundation of the building is made of concrete, but the true foundation of the Phoenix Commons community is its members, and the relationships that will sustain them as they age together. We are happy to launch a new series of videos with interviews of our founding members, in which they share their stories, aspirations, and expectations with the wider world. In the first episode of “Meet the Members,” we introduce Larry, a freelance journalist and poet with some serious cooking skills to boot!

Neighbors That Sail Together Stay Together

Phoenix Commons is so much more than a building, it’s an organic community of active adults who are not afraid to navigate the waters of aging together. This past weekend, Phoenix Commons members got together for a sunset cruise and dinner, and here’s what one of them had to say about the experience:

We had a great time last night! The weather was incredible. A welcoming breeze of wind gave us a welcome to the ocean as the crescent moon beamed above us. Skies were clear, stars twinkled above, the laughter was lively. This is the LIFE!

When you come across choppy waters on your aging journey, it helps to have good neighbors to lean on! Contact us today to find out how a cooperative lifestyle community like Phoenix Commons can help you get the most out of the next chapter of your life.

Foundation time! In today’s photos, crews are working with freshly poured cement to set the foundation for Phoenix Commons. Watching the cement pour was akin to watching a Transformers movie, but even more exciting for everyone who is planning to live together there.

This week’s update features a rare shot facing northeast. The 7-11 convenience store, which you can see is located directly across the street, is just one of the many nearby amenities that make our location so pedestrian friendly!
