Future Neighbors Celebrate the Holidays Together

One of the best things about cohousing is that you get to celebrate all kinds of holidays, milestones, and special occasions with your neighbor-friends. Even though the building is still under construction, that didn’t stop the members of Phoenix Commons from getting together for some good ole’ holiday fun!

After an abbreviated business meeting, over a dozen of the community’s members went out for dinner next door at East Ocean Seafood Restaurant, followed by a dessert social back at the office. It’s truly heart-warming to see the camaraderie that has developed between the members, and they are excited to move into the new building in time for Thanksgiving 2015!

The community eagerly awaits new members, so if you’d like to spend the next chapter of your life surrounded by positive and caring peers, contact us today to learn more and arrange a meeting with current members. Happy Holidays!

Construction Update: December 10, 2014

Despite the seemingly endless – yet necessary! – rain that we’ve been blessed with in the Bay Area these past weeks, crews have been making progress at the Phoenix Commons construction site. With all the garage walls now set in concrete, work on the podium level is being extended to most of the second floor (Pic. 1). It’s easier to see now how the building frames the approach to the Park Street Bridge (Pic. 2), and it will look even more majestic once all four floors are built. The large garage entry (Pic. 3) will accommodate tall handicap-accessible vans if they are needed in the future. For more photos, you can follow us on Facebook or Google+!

Construction Update: November 26, 2014

It felt more like summer today at the Phoenix Commons construction site, with the imposing concrete walls providing relief from the warm sunlight. Most of the work right now is centered around the future garage, its wooden wall molds completing the building’s perimeter at the northeast end of the building (Pic. 1). Inside, crews are preparing yet more rebar for the impending cement spray (Pic. 2), while other workers can enjoy the nice view from the second floor podium (Pic. 3). To Live Longer and Healthier, Cultivate an Attitude of Gratitude

Thanksgiving Day can bring out a lot of positive feelings and emotions in people, and they’re induced by much more than just turkey! In a recent article in LiveScience, Tia Ghose examines the wealth of scientific literature linking gratitude with improved health and wellbeing. Some of the benefits of expressing gratitude include:

  • Improved sleep quality and duration
  • Healthier levels of cholesterol and blood pressure
  • Lower lifetime risk of anxiety and depression
  • Higher rates of adherence to dietary and medical regimens

An interesting caveat of this power of gratitude is that it works better when focused on others. In a recent paper published in the Journal of Positive Psychology, it was shown that keeping a diary of blessings boosted happiness significantly more than recalling a sense of pride in one’s own accomplishments. Acts of kindness and gratitude towards others tend to be reciprocated or passed on, providing fuel for a virtuous cycle of good vibrations. On behalf of all those affiliated with the Phoenix Commons community, we wish you a very happy Thanksgiving, and hope that everyone has the opportunity to pass on a whole lot of happiness with a little bit of gratitude.

Construction Update: November 18, 2014

There is so much activity at the Phoenix Commons construction site these days, one could walk around for hours and not get bored! The view from the bridge (Pic. 1) shows work now commencing on the podium level, which will be a big slab of concrete separating the ground floor common areas from the wood-framed units above. The elevator shaft is starting to take shape as well (Pic. 2), and concrete walls are being created in the future parking garage (Pic. 3). Construction Update: November 12, 2014

Work continues on schedule at the Phoenix Commons construction site, and the waterfront side of the ground floor is now covered with the beginnings of a ceiling. At the other end, the cement pour went off without a problem and crews are busy framing wooden molds with rebar to create more concrete walls.

Construction Update: November 4, 2014

With each week, the Phoenix Commons construction site takes on a new character. The northern end is a sea of steel just waiting to be smothered with cement, and the concrete walls on the southern end are seeing glimpses of a ceiling. The first photo gives a sense of how high the ceilings will be on the ground floor.

Construction Update: October 28, 2014

Just in time for Halloween, the walls at the Phoenix Commons construction site are sprouting up like pieces of a huge concrete skeleton. With more of the structure in place, it’s now easier to walk around and really imagine the members enjoying these 7,000+ square feet of common space. Construction Update: October 21, 2014

The main attraction this week is the spraying of the wooden molds with cement to create solid concrete walls. The workers I spoke with all took great pride in their work, and rightfully so – look at how smooth those walls are! With the underground work nearly complete, crews will soon start pouring the foundation for the northeastern section of the building, where the garage will be located.
